Manimahesh Yatra Halted Due to Severe Weather Conditions in Himachal Pradesh

Chamba: The renowned Manimahesh Yatra in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh has been entirely halted due to persistent heavy rainfall and landslides, as confirmed by officials on Friday (August 29, 2025). Authorities have ordered all pilgrims to cease their journey beyond Chamba and return to their current locations. This year, even the ceremonial staffs known as ‘chhadis,’ which are traditionally taken to Manimahesh Lake, have been prohibited from proceeding due to safety issues.

Chamba's Deputy Commissioner, Mukesh Repaswal, stated that the decision was made because several sections of the route remain obstructed, rendering further travel unsafe.

This disruption occurs just before the significant ritual bath set for August 31, when thousands of devotees typically immerse themselves in the sacred Dal Lake near the Manimahesh Kailash peak.

Officials noted that adverse weather conditions have limited the participation of pilgrims this year, with many unable to reach the lake.

Additionally, reports indicate that 11 pilgrims have lost their lives during the pilgrimage thus far. Some bodies have been recovered, while others are still unaccounted for. District authorities have also reported numerous injuries due to landslides and flash floods affecting various points along the pilgrimage route. Thousands of devotees from Himachal Pradesh and neighboring states are stranded at different locations, with rescue operations currently in progress.

Deputy Commissioner Repaswal confirmed the fatalities and mentioned that efforts are being made to ensure the safety of those stranded. He remarked, “Given the weather and road conditions, halting the yatra was the only feasible option.”

The Manimahesh Yatra, which honors Lord Shiva, is one of the most esteemed and challenging pilgrimages in northern India. This year's journey has been significantly affected by the monsoon's wrath, transforming a spiritual event into a humanitarian crisis.
